Podiatry - Circulation Testing

Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) and vascular testing is a non-invasive assessment used by podiatrists to help evaluate blood flow to the lower limbs. By comparing blood pressure readings at the ankle and the arm, this testing can assist in identifying signs of reduced circulation that may impact foot and leg health.

Vascular testing may be used to help:

  • Screen for possible peripheral arterial disease (PAD)

  • Assess lower limb circulation in people with diabetes or cardiovascular risk factors

  • Support clinical decision-making for wound care and healing capacity

  • Monitor changes in circulation over time

  • Guide appropriate referrals to GPs or medical specialists

The assessment is quick, painless, and performed using specialised equipment by trained podiatrists. Results are provided to help inform discussions with your healthcare team and support coordinated care where further investigation or management is required.

What To Expect

Your vascular assessment is delivered across two appointments under the one fee to allow accurate testing and a clear discussion of your results.

The first appointment is a 40-minute Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) assessment. During this session, your podiatrist will take blood pressure readings from your arms and ankles using specialised, non-invasive equipment. The assessment is painless and performed while you are resting, with a focus on comfort and accuracy.

A second appointment is scheduled at a later date for a 10-minute results consultation. This can either be in person or via Telehealth. This session is dedicated to explaining your results, what they may indicate about your lower limb circulation, and how they fit into your overall foot and vascular health. Where appropriate, your podiatrist may discuss next steps or recommend sharing the findings with your GP or healthcare team.

Some Common FAQs

Do I need a referral from my GP?
A referral is not required to book the assessment. However, with your consent, results may be shared with your GP or other healthcare providers to support coordinated care.

What should I wear to my appointment?
Loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to your arms and lower legs is recommended. You may be asked to remove shoes and socks during the assessment.

What do the results show?
The results provide information about blood flow to the lower limbs. Your podiatrist will explain what the findings may indicate and how they relate to your foot health.

Does this test diagnose vascular disease?
Yes. The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) was introduced as a screening method for the diagnosis of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease. ABI remains a reliable and valuable indicator of lower limb vascular disease.
